Holly and her sister Maggie, along with Kooper and Helen, had opportunity to play, swim and visit at the Lake Vermilion cabin. Maggie has a lovely family – Kris, Josh and Anna – who all live in the metro area. She has a smaller build than Holly and a more timid demeanor. The two of them played mostly on land being cautious not to engage in too much roughhousing while getting to know each other. It was interesting to see them together, watching their personalities and preferences. Maggie isn’t as fond of the water as Holly, we suspect because she hasn’t had as much exposure. I watch Holly and Anna play – Holly wagging her tail, Anna giggling and burying her head from Holly’s quick licking tongue – and wondered how much different would Holly’s personality be if she had grown up with a young girl in the house instead of a sassy cat and princess dachshund. Exposure and experiences certainly have a significant contribution to how our dogs have developed but yet there is a core characteristic they share – the sweetness and gentleness, the expressive eyes, the sincerity in their devotion and love of their family. They have the same mother and the same father, raised in the home of the same breeder for their first eight weeks of life. Those foundations are critical for the launching of a soft soul. Holly & Maggie were blessed; and from our shared conversations about our dogs, I know both the Glood’s and I feel blessed as well.
The shared time for the golden sister’s could not be possible without the generosity and work of Lana. She coordinated the schedules, visit and meals for the week-end. And as icing on the cake, she orchestrated a little surprise birthday party for both Kooper and I! My dogs love birthday parties, no matter who or how many times! It’s a bit embarrassing when one of your dog charges right in and buries her head into the gift bag while the other grabs a corner of one and starts shaking her head as if a severe bee sting had just occurred. Sharing joy of time is one thing, sharing joy of a toy is another! It’s important to know your joys!
