Election Day in America!  It’s a tense day in the house today, not with them but with me.  The dogs are doing what they do  – enjoying a fine routine with life, feeling content with their home and friendships, and trusting their leaders.   I am trying to follow their lead today!

Distractions are good.  DeeAnn as usual is creative in finding ways to do so.  Indeed Holly has gotten so accustom to DeeAnn finding a way to make a game out of anything within reach that she makes her way over to DeeAnn and slowly sits in front with a ‘now what’ look on her face, but fully game for anything.  Reluctance, inquisitiveness, gamesmanship and reward all rolled into the one moment.  Inevitably something is placed on or around Holly’s head, ears, feet or bridge of her nose resulting in a motionless dog with big droopy soulful eyes looking back at DeeAnn.  I watch and wonder if this is the same dog that goes ballistic bouncing off the couch & floor when new company comes in the door?   Different games have different rules, some needing more officiating than others.

Kooper came to hang out with us on Election Day.  A miniature dachshund, border collie, golden retriever, black cat and chocolate lab all chilling together on this critical day in our country’s history – sharing space civilly, free to be their own version of themselves so long as it does not include hurt & harm, giving and receiving tenderness and willing to take direction, sometimes with peaceful protest.

It makes me wonder, how did things get so complicated?
