It was our Sven Saw Sister’s Christmas gathering this week-end. Friday night was our first sleepover at the Harvey house. That in itself was a blog event but then things got even better! Lana pulled her magic and had Kristie keeping the group together at the house until she had arrived. Together we were when the doorbell rang and at the Harvey House door was Lana, Kooper and this absolutely adorable lab puppy. Kimber Blu was officially introduced to us and had us all smitten over the puppy cuteness. All I should say except Holly. Her face was as long as a horse’s head, her eyes sulky and her energy low. With a couple exceptions, she kept her distance and made certain there was acceptable space between her and the small young pup. It reminded me of her first meeting with Keltie, she turned her head and would not look at her. If DeeAnn twisted her body placing Keltie on the opposite side, Holly’s head would turn towards DeeAnn. Once DeeAnn twisted back placing Keltie within sight, Holly would look the other way. That went on for awhile. Obviously that has worked itself out and now they are inseparable best friends. I have a hunch the relationship between Kimber and her will be similar.
Kimber was well socialized with women that night. We took our turns holding or playing with her. I played the aunt card and took multiple turns that lasted significantly longer. DeeAnn & I both were in little Kimber’s face smelling her breath – breathing in the glorious smell of puppy breath. I kept telling that little puppy how lucky she was to have landed with Lana & Kooper; and I can tell already how lucky Holly, Helen, Rainie, Keltie, Gracie, DeeAnn and I are to have this little sweet soul land in our world.
After Lana left, the puppy boost lasted a while with all of us. The dogs had had an adrenaline surge and needed some play time amongst themselves. When all settled down, we went downstairs to watch a movie. Six Triple Eight – an excellent movie. The dogs were a bit miffed that their couch was taken over by humans. Helen was the exception, she took opportunity snuggled in tight to Georgette, one of her favorite humans. The others all had to be shushed off the couch at some point during the evening. The most dramatic was Holly who held on to the belief that rules will change if you curl up tight and behave like a sack of potatoes. She did and nearly flattened her nose as she fell to the floor from my (gentle) pushing from behind. Georgette’s classic line – “that’s a hold out”.
It was validating though to see my dog go through denial and take some desparate measures in hopes that something that was about to happen, would not. That’s been my January.
