Like clockwork, Fall has arrived. Leaves are changing color, temperatures are dropping in the evening and leaves are falling on the ground. And Holly and Helen are blending into the scenery. It truly is a gorgeous time of year, and that is what I need to stay focussed on – the moment and not the white, cold future.
The days fill up with activities, chores and tasks. There’s not a day goes by where I don’t feel productive and grateful. I wake up each morning giving both Helen and Holly some loving and letting Holly know that we get another HollyDay. Needless to say I’m loving retirement!
Each HollyDay brings something new. Often times Keltie joins us in the morning. Other times Kimber does. Other times Kimber and Kooper do. Sometimes none of them do. Holly has learned that nothing begins until everyone has had their teeth brushed. Until then, the house is quiet and calm. I go upstairs to get ready, which includes brushing my teeth. Joining me is a line up of dogs, generally two sometimes more. It is no wonder I am ordering toothpaste on a regular basis. This said, it is not a foolproof plan. Helen still had six teeth removed last month.
Some may find routines boring and mundane. I find them comforting. The dogs find them reassuring. Knowing what the activity is going to be, knowing where you are suppose to be and knowing what is coming next – produces a confident and comfortable dog. And with that comes a content, calm and very happy Dog Mom (or Surrogate).
Like clockwork….
