Summer rolls on and with it, Holly’s ball! The neighbor grandkids have been spending time at their grandparents house this week, except for the chunks of time they are in my backyard visiting Holly, Helen and I. Periodically I need to leave and the kids head back home, always graciously. And occasionally either a parent or a grandparent mosey over and encourage the kids to come back to their own yard. Diane’s tactic nearly failed on her when she gave shout to the kids – “Time for ice cream!” and the response from one was – “Do we have too?” That prompted the big grin that I love to see from her.
The girls engaged Holly in a game of ‘Hide and Seek’, also known as ‘Find It’. Each one took a turn hiding Holly’s yellow soccer ball in the yard for Holly to race around and find, so they could hide it again. Holly caught on to the game quickly, including sitting still to have her eyes covered because there is no peeking in Hide and Seek! I sat in the adirondack chair and watched the show. At one point, I heard “you don’t have to plug her ears, take your fingers out’. Holly didn’t care, she was one of the girls and actively playing a game, going with the flow of rule changes and expectations. When she heard the release command to go ‘Find It’, she charged off, circling the yard until she found the yellow ball. The most creative hiding spot was inside the outdoor toy box, buried under the frisbees and tug toys that seldom get used. Holly found it. Indeed, she went 4-0 with each of the four girls having their turn at hiding. One suggested Helen have a turn which was quickly shot down by the others because it would take forever. Holly is loved for the thrills and craziness, Helen for the snuggles and calmness.
Today was a cabin day. We left early, before the girls were outside. Holly was reluctant to leave the fenceline, instead holding her ball and looking into Donna’s porch. Her attitude adjusted quickly once I turned down Comstock Lake Road leading to the cabin. You know you are living right when you are reluctant to leave because you might miss out on a good time, but end up having a great time because you left. What Holly shows me is that living right simply means you bring the good time with you.
I’m gonna live, laugh, love, just for today
Gonna take all the trouble that tomorrow might bring and put it away
Gonna drink every drop of happiness ’til they cover me up
I’m gonna live, laugh, love just for today
